My First Sneak Attack Sponsorship!!

What is a Sneak Attack?



Twice a week, an Etsy shop(s) with few or no sales is chosen as a "victim,” and at a given time multiple buyers all visit the site and buy one or more items each, resulting in a whole slew of surprise business in a very short time. It’s a great way to give a big boost to a new Etsy shop!



Go to http://www.handmademovement.com at or after 4:00pm today and you'll see the chosen shops' names. Then go to the shop(s) and purchase an item (or more), making sure to include the words "Sneak Attack" in your Message To Seller during checkout. The shop owners will be informed of what is happening just as the attack begins, so they'll know what is going on.



Don’t worry about being too late for the attack! If the shop names are still up on the Handmade Movement site, you can still go and make a purchase! They are usually still up into the next day.



Even if you can't make a purchase you can still help by giving this thread an occasional bump and spreading the word. You can also join in by "hearting," "favoriting," or sending a message of encouragement to the shop(s)!

My "babies"

I just stumbled into a conversation about cute pets, and thought I better pull out some cute pics of my "babies" lol. :) Without further ado:

Just a Funny Picture (or two)

So, yesterday my husband comes home from work and hops out of his carpool buddy's truck, then reaches into the back of the truck and grabs two bags, one of which is almost as tall as him!!

Curious, I go outside and discover this:

Both bags were FULL of packing peanuts! I guess his work was doing some cleaning and was going to get rid of them, and he asked if he could take them instead since he knows I ship things frequently!

I think we'll be stocked up on packing peanuts for at least a year..... ;)

OK Dog Reunion, Hosted by Nebraska Humane Society and Nebraska Border Collie Rescue

Today we got to do something really wonderful - we got to attend a special reunion for all people who have fostered an OK Rescue Dog and all the OK dogs themselves!!

What is an OK Dog? It is a dog that was rescued from a large compound in Oklahoma!! You can read the full story and history at the Nebraska Border Collie Rescue website: http://rescuebc.homestead.com/OKrescue2009.html , and you can also see pictures of the first few days after being rescued.

The reunion was held at Bone Jour, which is part of the Nebraska Humane Society. Many of the dogs and "their people" attended! :)

We fostered a sweet dog called Maida and her two brand new puppies Senga and Sorley back in Sept/Oct of 2009. We fostered for a little over a month, but then my back went out right when the puppies became due for adoption (seriously bad timing!). The puppies found forever homes right away (no surprise there), but Maida still needed some time so she ended up being fostered by a wonderful lady named Cordi who fosters for the Nebraska Border Collie rescue (she actually was the foster mom for our dog Finley before we adopted him!!).

Today Maida came with her new owners, and she looked WONDERFUL!! Very healthy and happy, though a bit shy to be around so many people and dogs. We were hoping the puppies would make an appearance as well, but sadly they did not. We did find out that Senga's name got changed to "Ginger"... presumably because of her reddish coat... but no one knew where Sorley ended up or if he still had the same name.

Overall, it was a great time and we were really glad we got to go! Next time we probably won't bring Finley, since he wasn't an OK dog, but we can't wait to see the other OK dogs again. :) We are hoping that at the next reunion (which will be sometime in the fall) we will get to see the puppies! :)

Why I Love to Participate in Sneak Attacks - and BNR's!!

So, you've probably noticed that I've been posting a lot lately about the S.N.E.A.K team on Etsy. That's because I just plain love that group of people!!!!

I've never been a huge fan of the teams on Etsy, mostly just because I didn't have the time to keep up with the many rules, etc. or even want to take the time to find a team for that matter. :) However, one day I randomly discovered a Sneak Attack thread, and ever since then I've been hooked!!

There's really nothing like the thrill of getting to be one of an Etsy's shops first sales. Or even just getting to be a part of surprising an Etsy shop with sales, hearts, etc.! I remember what it was like to get my first few sales, and even now I still get a rush of excitement when I see that someone has purchased from me (well, and maybe a little relief, because this is my only living so if I don't get sales, I can't pay bills lol).

I offered to host a BNR for the Sneaky folks, and got a bunch of them to go in with me on it. It has been a BLAST!! I made it a really simple BNR - you buy from a shop, your shop name replaces theirs on the list - so there's no confusion about x2 or hearts or whatever. It has been soooooo much fun! I think it has really lifted spirits and helped to spread a little more awareness about the team and what we do.

One thing I love about Etsy is the fun community! There are always lots of fun events and games and conversations to take part in.

One of the most popular games on Etsy is something called a BNR, or Buy and Replace. How it generally works is that there is a list of shops posted on a thread. If you buy from one of these shops, your name replaces theirs and now YOU have the chance to be bought off the list! There are sometimes other rules involved, like price minimums or ways to get bonus days, but that is a very general idea of what they are.

I am proud to say that I am currently listed on two different types of BNRs!! The first one is one of my own creation, and it is a WONDERFUL opportunity to introduce you to my most favorite group on Etsy - the S.N.E.A.K. team!!! This BNR is very simple - buy from someone's shop, get them kicked off the list. No special rules or multipliers to have to worry about!! The second BNR is actually a BNS, or Buy and Stay. You can buy into the list, and depending on who you buy from and when you buy, you get a certain amount of days that your name will stay on the list! :) I guess it makes it a little more risky in that there is no guarantee that you will get a sale during your days on the list, but what makes it a little better is the fact that for every one day you buy onto the list, you get a "second chance" day for free to try to get a sale! What I am coveting right now...

Yes, I know it is bad to covet. But lately I've had a small obsession with biking - namely, that I'm unable to join in with my husband when he hits the trails on his bike, because of my joint condition in my pelvis/hips/lower back.

However, I thought about it quite a bit two weeks ago when my hubs was out on a ride, and found what I was looking for: handcycles! Bikes that can be "driven" by pedaling your hands and arms rather than feet and legs. :)

But after many many hours of research, I have been disappointed to find that most handcycles cost as much as a cheap used car. Seriously.

I have one I'm watching on eBay right now - it has some parts missing so it would need some repairing and a tuneup, but still is the only thing anywhere near affordable, and it's still sitting at almost $700 once you add in shipping. Ouch.

But while I try to figure things out, here is one handcycle I'd like to share with you, and it is probably the bike of my dreams (I mean, I haven't ridden it, so I'm not sure if it is, but as far as I can tell I would love it): http://bike-on.com/product/hase-kettwiesel-handcycle-618.htm

Sigh.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of accompanying my parents to a local large Arts & Crafts show. There were hundreds of vendors and plenty of great things to look at, taste, and smell! It was also a great opportunity to promote my business by wearing my products and handing out cards whenever the opportunity arose.

However, due to the large size of the arena, and all the subsequent walking, I was sore and tired for the rest of the day yesterday and wasn't able to get much done except to prepare the house for the Open House we had today!!!

Then this morning it was more preparation before packing up all the animals and heading over to my brother's house...

Now here we are and it's almost 5 pm and I feel like the weekend has passed me by too quickly! ;)

At least the weather has been nice enough to keep the windows open and enjoy a little fresh air...

Terrifying Thursday

Here I am near the end of the week, and I feel like I haven't gotten enough done! It doesn't help that I woke this morning with a raging fever, swollen eyes, and the feeling that I had been punched repeatedly in the face... yep, another sinus infection.

Am I the only one that seems to run out of time?!?

So, here I go at attempting to work - I'm filled up with sinus meds, cranking the humidifier for some warm steam, downing the water with a passion and attempting to read the screen without my glasses to avoid pressure to my sinuses... should be an interesting day...

"Why I Love" Wednesday

Today's topic: "Why I Love Pudgy's Pizza"

Yes, I realize I have already mentioned Pudgy's pizza in at least one other post. But every time I go there, I fall in love all over again.

If you live in the Omaha area, you MUST go and check out Pudgy's Pizza. I realize for some of you who live further away like we do (it takes us about 30 minutes to get there, 45 if the traffic is bad) it is a bit of a drive, but it is WORTH IT!!!!

You don't need to be a Celiac (gluten free) to enjoy their food. For the non-celiacs, I have heard that they have the BEST Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza in all of Omaha. In fact, every time we are there I would say at least 75% of the orders are for the Chicago-Style Deep Dish pizza. They also have Chicago-style hotdogs (with all the fixings) AND Chicago-Style hot beef sandwiches (think similar to a Philly Cheesesteak). Popular specialty pizzas include Cheeseburger and The Austrian Delight, which is an Alfredo-sauce pizza with several meats on it.

Their prices are VERY good - they easily beat out any of the chain restaurants when you compare size and topping choices/amounts. Their service is even better - the owner is almost always there and a part of every order!!! In fact, I don't think that we've ever been there when he wasn't there - but I'm sure he must take a day off every once in a while. "Mr. Pudgy" (not his real name lol) is possibly the nicest guy you will meet, and he always makes it a point to get to know his customers personally. We have noticed when we go that almost every customer ends up being a repeat customer!!!!

For Celiacs like myself, this place is a slice of pizza heaven! You can get just about any size of crust except 7", and you can get ANY topping combination!!! That's right - unlike some other places that limit you to just cheese or only a few toppings, you can get ANY topping combination! I personally love the Cheeseburger pizza, and my own Hawaiian creation of ham, pineapple and cream cheese (yeah it sounds weird, but once you try it you'll never go back to not having cream cheese on the pizza!!). Not only that, but you can get BONELESS CHICKEN WINGS! That's right, actual food. They are fried and delicious, and something that you often have to miss out on when you can't have gluten. They also have breadsticks and cheesesticks that are gluten free.

They also have a rewards program for their customers - you can collect pizza slice magnets, and once you have 10 you get $15 off your next order!! You only get magnets for 15" pizzas and above I believe, but still a heck of a deal.

Since it is a bit of a drive for us, we have discovered a solution that works well for us - we go once per month, eat one pizza in the store (and usually wings, sometimes cheesesticks or salad) and then order 3 more as "take and bake" pizzas! :) Then we have the equivalent of about one Pudgy's pizza per week for the rest of the month (I could possibly eat pizza every day, but we know that we 'shouldn't' so we try to limit ourselves lol). This way Pudgy's still gets our business even though we can't afford to drive out there every week.

Anyway, enough rambling on and on for now. Just do me a favor and stop by there to check them out if you are in the area. :) Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

First, I found out that today is National Tartan Day from ZaftigDelights. While I'm not Scottish, or Irish, or much of anything other than American, I thought there may be some of you who are just dying to bring out that Tartan Kilt, and this gives you an excuse! :)

200th Sneak Attack to happen TODAY!

As I have mentioned previously, I am a proud member of the Etsy Sneak Attack team. I could go into details on what the team is, but I feel like the best desciption can already be found by going to http://www.handmademovement.com so I'll just let you head there for more details. :)

Anyway, so the big news is that today's attack is the 200th Sneak Attack since they were started!!! Very big deal - that means that over 400 shops have been "attacked" since the inception of this concept. Over 400 shops have had the most wonderful surprise they have probably ever received in their Etsy shops - many sales pouring in at around the same time with the words "sneak attack" attached!

Even if you are not a part of the team, you can always join in on the attack. :) The shops are always wonderful and you are sure to find some great new shops to follow!

Adventures in Gluten Free Eating - Going on Vacation

Happy Post-Easter everyone!!

This weekend my hubs and I had the blessing of celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary - it kinda stunk that it fell on Easter weekend, but the good part was that the hubs got a three day weekend so I was able to book us a mini vacation down to Kansas City!

We really needed to get out of town, and it was nice to get away from things for a while. I tried to plan ahead for most things - I booked us a hotel that included breakfast, I planned out a few free/cheap attractions but still left us time for relaxing in the hotel pool, etc.

I even planned out some of our restaurants... but even so, it still was very difficult to find gluten free choices! I was suprised at just how difficult it was - some of the places we planned on either weren't located in Kansas City (you would think they'd have at least ONE Outback Steakhouse, right? Well the only one was almost all the way to St. Joseph, MO!) or the location was no longer in existence, etc. One place we did manage to find ahead of time and that was still open had a gluten free option, but then the gal that was at the checkout counter couldn't even say "gluten" correctly (she kept calling it "glutton") and didn't seem to understand what it entailed. Then when we finally got our food, it was subpar at best and later caused both of us stomach upset (it wasn't a gluten contamination issue, as my hubs isn't celiac, but rather some other type of yuck). Very frustrating!!

The hotel breakfast was also disappointing - the "cook to order" was only an omelet station, and they only had the same type of omelet each day. Plus, I'm not a huge fan of eggs to begin with. Thankfully, I had packed some gluten free granola bars and fruit strips for just such an occasion! :) At least for breakfast, I was prepared.

We had one great high point that was unexpected - I really wanted to go to the T-Rex Restaurant in The Legends Mall, and emailed ahead of time to see if there would be a way to get a gluten-free meal. Not only did I receive a great response from them assuring me that they could work something out, but when I arrived they sent out their head chef who personally went through the menu with me and designed a meal that was gluten free! They actually do have a dedicated fryer just for gluten-free frying there, and were willing to make me some gluten-free onion straws for my burger (which of course arrived on lettuce) along with some gluten-free fries. I hadn't had onion straws in MONTHS!! :) It may have been the highlight of the trip for me lol.

I also booked us a tour through Boulevard Brewing Company, which was fantastic but slightly too tempting for someone like me who has only been living gluten free since January when I was diagnosed. It took all my self control not to indulge! ;) Especially because at the end of the tour you get free beer. But, it did mean that my hubs got to have a few extra free beers because he got to have mine. It was probably the best gift I could have ever given him lol!

I was also able to talk to a local business in one of the malls, who had ordered some shirts from a company that were poorly made. I gave them my card and took theirs, and promised to send some samples. So there is a possibility I may be getting my products into a retail store for the first time!! :)

Overall, I'd say that our first gluten-free vacation turned out ok. Next time I will probably have to spend a little more time calling ahead and making sure restaurants are open, and that there are more gluten free options available. Well, either that, or pack a bunch of food. ;)

April Goals

Today is the first day of April, and time to set some new goals for my business! :) It's hard to think when the weather is sooooooo nice out like it is today, but I have managed to set up three hopefully attainable goals for this month.

First, I want to try to write the equivalent of a blog a day. I say "equivalent" because I know that there will be days where I won't have time to hop on and write a blog - like this weekend, for example, when my husband and I will be out of town celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary!! :) Should be a great time. So there will be days where I may post a couple of blogs.

Second, I hope to finish up my poetry book. I decided to turn it into an Etsy community project by asking Etsians to illustrate the pages (the poems were already written a long time ago). However, in doing such, I gave everyone so much time to finish them that most either forgot or procrastinated and now I have passed the deadline I hope to receive the pages by (March 31) and have instead been begging to get the pages by April 9th now..... so as long as I can get my pages from my fellow Etsians, I should be able to do all the formatting and putting it together and then getting it published on LuLu!

Finally, I'm hoping to clinch one really big order this month for a local eyecare facility. Actually, as long as I get one big order from ANYWHERE I'd be happy lol! Last month was terrible for my business - I sold one whopping order of 1 shirt - so I need some sales in a desperate way. ;) I might just do a "moving sale" even though we haven't sold our house yet... stay tuned and I'll let you know.
